The main problem comes from the time-depth conversion, as bathymetry is generally in meters whereas a seismic software is in seconds (time domain).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workflow is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">1) Get a xyz file representing bathymetry<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">2) Convert this file using the velocity in water, so the bathymetry is now in seconds<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3) Import 4) Make surface<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, it&#8217;s not as simple !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1) Get a xyz file<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is an example using GEBCO data: https:\/\/download.gebco.net<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Gebco-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-236\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Select your area of interest and download all available data. Unzip folder. At this stage all data are gridded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-225\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-226\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive5.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-227\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2) Convert Depth in Time<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In seismic interpretation we usually interpret in time. So, it means that all data must be converted in time domain prior to any import process. It is very difficult to convert data in time once they have been imported in depth&#8230; So, please think different, think in time !<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-228\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-229\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3) Importing the newly created file (in time)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-230\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-231\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive10.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-232\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>4) Make a surface = interpolation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive11.jpeg\" alt=\"Importing bathymetric data in Petrel means that depth files must be converted to the time domain.\" class=\"wp-image-233\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive12.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-234\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/aurelieng.fr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Diapositive13.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-235\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&nbsp;Please remember that bathymetric data are obtained from a multibeam device that has different acquisition parameters than a seismic device (source, wavelength etc&#8230;).
